The Best of Brochure Design 12 by Public and published by Rockport is another title in Rockport’s successful line of brochure design books. The structure of the series hasn’t changes much over the years but it still manages to pack a punch of quality and value to the audience.
The Best of Brochure Design 12 is an assortment of the world’s best brochure designs, brochures being such an important part of any companies offerings. The collection is well curated and substantial in size and quality. For any of you Indesign geeks out there you will get pages upon pages of inspiration and witty advice from the professionals who designed the pieces. The presentation of the brochures using the majority of the page looks beautiful and all the brochures are professionally photographed on often elegant backdrops.
Inspiration can be sought in the way the designers utilised space and layout on the page, and treatments to type and photographs. The use of colour, textures, patterns, and a variety of mixed media will just take your breath away. There is even great thoughtfulness into how the reader opens and navigates the brochure and this can often be an experience in itself.
One of the unique aspects of The Best of Brochure Design 12, and something I have been advocating for many years is the inclusion of designer statements or briefs. Every design has either a sentence or maybe even a couple of paragraphs explaining what the work is about. This includes major challenges, inspiration and critical information about the brief and the background of the client. This information helps put some context to the works and makes you better appreciate the designs. There are even little pop out bubbles highlighting key notes or features of the design overlaid on top of the graphic. This is a nice touch.
It is difficult to fault this title, I really do think the series is growing to greater and greater heights in regards to curating quality content and displaying it in a professional way. For a coffee table book for any designer it will be a great one, but for those who work on brochures or even those who are looking for ways to present catalogues or product information great inspiration will be found.
