Beautiful Modeler made by Interactive Fabrication is a concept 3D modelling program utilising a multitouch-based interface (an Ipad!) to manipulate 3D models. Technologies like this are a great first step towards a more fluid and interactive way of CAD design which could one day transform into interfaces like shown in the movies like Minority Report and James Bond. As you can see the program is at a primitive nurb based stage which makes it useless for technical models, but perfect for more free-form sculpture models like shown in the video. Despite these early development stages one could ponder at how easily a program like this could transform into a fully fledged program in a few years time. All it would take is a side tool menu like seen on Photoshop/Illustrator with some basic model templates like extrusions, sweeps, lofts etc. A simple dimension tool could be pop up after each touch based command given to the model.
The great thing about this program is that it can be export models as an STL file and then it can be printed by a 3D printer like this elegant cheese block shown below.
