CAD and rendering software is such a vital part of our work as a digital industrial designer. So much so that a different CAD programs might meen the difference in how well or accurate your design output is. There are just so many differences between CAD programs and there is an abundance of choice. Some designers have the blessing of choosing their favorite program, whereas for others it very much depends on what locality, industry or business they work for. Regardless of these factors it will be interesting to find out the most widely used CAD and Rendering Programs used by Industrial Designers in 2010. If I have missed your CAD/Rendering program please comment and I will add it to the list! It will also be interesting to find out your opinions and experiences using these different software packages.

Your blog is great. The image you are using is of an AV remote designed by Cambridge Industrial Design for MTS, a company based in California (in case you did not know the source). It provides control over mulitple AV sources. Rendering was done in Photo360 and also StudioMAX ( thanks to Shove Media). Glad you liked it… More at http://www.cambridge-industrialdesign.com
Go Team Solidworks Woo WOo – definitely the best program on the market
I really enjoy V Ray as the most photo-realistic render engine. Maxwell Render is close but takes too long although the new version has some speed improvements.
It’s all about render speed rather than render quality. Yes it is always nice having a beautiful render but most of the time all you’re after is a clear way to communicate to your client, this doesn’t have to be achieved through a photograph like render.
You can never under-estimate how much a client is woooed by a pretty render..never
I also agree that Solidworks tends to be quite the standard, but there is so much competition and choice it is ridiculous. Rhino, 3D’s Max, AutoCad and Maya are all worthy competitiors.
I use both Rhino and Solidworks, but I’m a lot better at Rhino. To render I use V-Ray
[…] Designers really need when it comes to a rendering program. Just recently on Embody 3D we did a poll surveying the most popular CAD programs used in industry, and a large portion of voters cast their […]
Casting my vote via comment since I use Siemens NX which isn’t in your list. It has some quite impressive modeling tools. The freeform modeling in the new version is pretty slick: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmFnq4_MkaY
Did you leave out Autodesk Alias Studio for any specific reason? Most of the hardcore IDers I know use Studio as their primary tool.
I was also wondering this – Alias Studio is by far the best software I’ve used for Industrial Design and takes my vote. Its super fast and is the only real software designed solely for industrial designers that I have come across – nothing else I’ve seen comes close. Hardly anyone seems to have heard of it in Australia for some reason though. Also Autodesk Showcase is the most productive renderer I’ve used, and works seamlessly with Alias (but I think this is just a front-end for MentalRay, like photoview 360 and photoworks).
Thanks guys,
I did accidently left this one out, but I added it to the list. The short time I have had with Alias has been really impressive!
I also use Autodesk Alias as a design sotfware. Alias is definitively dedicated to designer whereas Solidworks is more dedicated to the engineering field. Just like Catia or Inventor. For visualisation Showcase is a pretty powerfull tool in the sense that it is really user friendly and you can get a good result pretty fast. Although high end visualisation is definitively Mental Ray.
