Review – LaCie | Starck Mobile Hard Drive

LaCie* and Philippe Starck* started working together 15 years ago and the latest addition is the LaCie Starck Mobile Hard Drive (LaCie | Starck) – it lets you backup, store or transfer your data with mobility. The device has a 2mm aluminium casing to prevent it from overheating and it is very sturdy, yet light enough which is suitable to take it with you where ever you go.  Also, the USB cable is tucked away within the device when it is not in use and can be easily coiled back inside after usage – so you won’t lose it!

The design of this device was about “complete experience” with the idea of “a good product is something you just need”. During the process for the design, Starck states that you have to find “the bone, the essence – why this product exist and try to transmit”. The ultimate use of the mobile hard drive is to store data; therefore the design resulted in appearing like a brain with a helmet. The brain is represented by the organic magma form of the interior and the helmet is represented by the polish aluminium exterior. This device not only looks stylish and timeless with the metallic finish, but the idea behind the design can make people think why was it designed in this form? This can result in deeper thoughts and create more imagination!

The LaCie | Starck is great, it is not heavy to carry, very compact and not bulky at all! However, the exterior makes you worry a little, this is because the casing is so hard that you might either drop it and hurt someone or scratch other people’s stuff. Looks can be deceiving…as once you scratch the polish aluminium case, a mark comes up and you may think – oh no… the mark is going to stay there forever…but wait – that’s not true! Once you wipe it off – it is gone!
